10 weight loss foods to buy at Trader Joe's!
If you’re trying to lose weight, it’s important to remember one thing: You have to eat less calories than you burn!
And while weight loss comes down to energy balance (calories in calories out) which means you can incorporate FUN foods from places like Trader Joe’s like cookie butter and their delicious Neapolitan Joe-Joe’s seasonal cookies (YUM!) it is also very important to buy healthy food products high in certain nutrients to help you stay on track with your goals.
In a place like Trader Joe’s where there are so many products and honestly all of them look amazing, you should strategically focus on grocery shopping with a purpose. If you have no idea where to begin when you enter Trader Joe’s, here are 10 weight loss foods that I recommend to my clients that you should buy, too!
Frozen Riced Cauliflower
I always make sure to have riced cauliflower in my freezer at all times because it seriously can be used in so many ways to pack in veggies and cut calories in any meal without compromising flavor! I recommend using this product alongside regular rice in stir fry dishes. 1 cup of this rice is only 30 calories, meaning you can add a lot of volume without compromising calories to help you reach your weight loss goals.
Reduced-Guilt Chunky Guacamole
There definitely ain’t nothing wrong with regular avocados… problem is they always go bad before I eat them with my busy schedule! That’s why I prefer to buy pre-packaged guacamole instead of making it myself. Not to mention this guac uses plain, non-fat Greek yogurt as it’s base so it cuts the calories down allowing you to have a larger portion for less calories. Many healthy babes don’t realize 1 medium avocado can easily pack 250 calories or more! While guacamole made with 1 plain avocado is very nutritious, filled with healthy fats and great for your skin… it is filled with a decent amount of calories that can prevent you from losing weight if you don’t pay attention to portions. That’s why product is always a staple for me!
Lightly Salted Edamame
We all have those days… I’m talking about the days you don’t want to cook, just lay on the couch and snuggle with your pups after an exhausting day of work and errands! I have those days more than I’d like to admit, which is why I keep these in my freezer 24/7. The part of my meals that is most labor-intensive is cooking protein. These edamame can be thawed overnight (perfect for prepping a salad the next day) or can easily be added to a stir fry with sauteed veggies, microwave quinoa and your favorite TJ’s sauce. Edamame packs 189 calories and 17 g of protein per 1 cup… UM HELLO babe that’s amazing!
Hi-Protein Veggie Burger
Okay here’s another really easy way to get protein if you’re tired and don’t want to cook. These frozen veggie burgers are one of my favorite buys from Trader Joe’s… plus they’re perfect for all my vegan babes! 1 burger packs 260 calories and 26 grams of protein, making it a perfect option for lunch or dinner. I pair mine with the reduced-guilt guacamole, 1 whole wheat pita, and spinach for an easy lunch. I sometimes air-fry it and top on a quinoa/cauliflower rice stir fry, too! Def recommended buying these ASAP!
Almond Cashew Macadamia Milk
While there is nothing wrong with TJ’s unsweetened vanilla almond milk (which is one of my faves), this milk is so tasty I couldn’t keep it off the list. 1 cup packs 30 calories! But what I’m most impressed with is how creamy this product is compared to almond milk! I prefer using this with their cold brew coffee concentrate as it provides more flavor without adding a ton of sugar and calories to my morning coffee. This also is a great choice to use with smoothies, overnight oats or your morning cereal.
Mediterranean Hummus To-Go Pack
If you’re always on the go running from work to errands to the gym… these pre-packaged hummus packets are going to be your best friend! When I’m really busy I buy snack pack versions of my favorite foods to save time prepping in the kitchen. This also makes sure I stay on track with my goals by eating nourishing, natural foods. I pair these with whole wheat pitas, sliced veggies, and pretzel thins.
Frozen Cauliflower Gnocchi
I definitely love regular gnocchi, but I swear Trader Joe’s freaking NAILED IT with this one babes! When I have days where I want to cook but don’t want to put in a lot of effort, I grab these out of my freezer. I love that these taste like straight PASTA (aka pasta heaven)… yet pack vegetables within them because cauliflower is a significant ingredient within! I pair them with my favorite pesto (listed below on this top 10 list) and either pan fry a chicken breast really quickly on my stove or chop up rotisserie chicken and mix it all together!
Everything BUT the Bagel Seasoning
There are tons of unique spices and seasonings to chose at TJ’s, but this one is a must-have. Whether you want to add this on top of avocado toast for breakfast or use it as a seasoning to you favorite Asian-inspired dish at dinner, this is a great way to add flavor without adding tons of calories!
Vegan Kale Cashew Basil Pesto
This pesto is too good to be true! I love using this as a fat source in meals. I pair it with the frozen cauliflower gnocchi, whole wheat pasta, or with my favorite high protein chickpea pasta. It also is a great addition to any Italian chicken dish, as pesto goes with everything! Plus it packs veggies, fiber and heart-healthy fats based upon the yummy ingredients they use.
Frozen Chile Lime Chicken Burgers
EMERGENCY PLEASE! Sometimes chicken just takes so damn long to make… which is why these burgers can be your SAVIOR for your next date night. Whether you grill them, air fry them, or pair with some oil and cook on your stove top… these burgers taste good AND are good for you! I love that there are no confusing preservatives or ingredients that confuse you on this product… besides the seasonings for the chile lime flavor, this burger is STRAIGHT UP what it says it is!
